Thank you for your description of the hostel in the East End. It sounds very similar to Deb's quarters. The date is 1980-1 the year she ran away so not so long after your experience. I'm guessing that some of the wretched residents in your hostel ended up staying a lot longer than a few weeks. Glad you were only passing through!

Spellbinding - if it was a book I'd be up till midnight!

Were we given a date? It reminds me of a hostel in the East End where I stayed for a few weeks back in 1974, run by an Irish Catholic organisation though I can't remember which one or how I ended up there. It was cheap was the main attraction. A good step up from Deb's hostel - we had our own rooms (tiny, just a bed and chair - maybe the building had been a convent and these were the nuns' cells) and front door key. It was all women and most looked pretty washed out. I don't think we were forced to pray, but there was an air of piety and misery.
